More than 50% of working Americans suffer from back pain each year. Not only that, but back pain ranks as the number two reason people see a doctor. While some causes of back pain are obvious (injury, improper lifting, etc.), other causes aren’t as obvious.

High Heels: Heels throw off your body’s alignment. They change your center of gravity and place extra stress and strain on your lower back, making you walk in an unnatural position. If you insist on wearing heels, the lower the better — try to keep it 1.5 inches or less. Also remember that heels are not meant to be worn for long distances or extended periods of time.

Flip Flops: While convenient and comfortable, if you wear flip flops for extended periods of time, the lack of support will place stress and strain on joints and tendons. Flip flops should be saved for the beach and the pool, not for walking any amount of time.

Sneakers: Sneakers are your best bet to prevent back pain. Any shoe with a rigid heel and midsole offer great support. Be sure to get fitted so you’re rocking the right size! You want the back of your shoe to be vertical, not tilting to one side or the other, and you also want a shoe that effectively absorbs shock.
