Did you know that on average, we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed? This means that choosing the right mattress is crucial! Sleep is our body’s chance to reset and restore from the day, and our mattress should aid in that process. Unfortunately, some mattresses can ultimately lead to back pain, aggravated discs in the spine, and even heart disease from poor sleep!

The Wrong Mattress Can Lead to Back Pain

1. Misalignment of the Lower Back

Back in the day, the water bed was the ultimate mattress. Nowadays, your hardly see waterbeds in use. Why? Because most people who slept on them started to develop horrible back pain! The issue with waterbeds is that while they do equalize pressure, they also allow the heaviest part of your body (your hips) to sag into the bed. This creates misalignment in the spine, specifically in the lower back.

It is important to find a mattress that properly supports your hips. This means that the center of the bed needs to be firm enough to support the weight of your hips for 7 to 10 hours each night.

2. Interrupted Sleep

Complete sleep cycles typically are about 90 minutes long, but most people have their sleep interrupted before they can reach the deep sleep stage of each cycle. Uncomfortable beds can push on pressure points and lead to pain and disrupted sleep. This is one of the most common reasons that people wake up groggy and tired in the mornings! Without reaching the deep level of sleep, your body never fully rests.

In 2010, a scientific review was published in Current Cardiology Reviews. This review found there is a strong relationship between sleep deprivation and high blood pressure. It also found that sleep deprivation correlates to heart disease and diabetes. Harvard Medical School has also found that interrupted sleep and poor sleep leads to poorer performance, decreased focus, hormone imbalances, and inflammation throughout the body.

3. Aggravated Spinal Discs

The discs in the spine provide stability for the back and neck. If these discs become aggravated or injured, the entire body suffers. The spine houses the body’s central nervous system, which controls every single cell and function in the body. If the spine becomes misaligned, the central nervous system cannot function as it should. This can lead to back pain, neck pain, brain fog, poor sleep, decreased focus, lack of energy, and many other issues.

What To Look For In A Mattress

1. Provides Support

When looking for a mattress, it is crucial to make sure that it provides proper support for the hips and spine. You want a mattress made of material that does not deteriorate over time. This ensures that each night your spine gets the proper support it needs to stay healthy and prevent lower back pain.

2. Relieves Pressure

It is important to find a mattress that supports the hips when lying down. If hips are allowed to sink into the mattress, spinal misalignment occurs. You want a mattress that provides alignment support and pressure relief. This allows your body to truly relax and rejuvenate overnight. Without pressure on your back, you’ll easily reach deep sleep in your sleep cycles. This will help you wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready for the new day!

3. Is Durable

Mattresses are expensive investments, so it is important to make sure the quality of the mattress and material it is made of is one that will last for years and years. At Pure Health Clinic, we know that money doesn’t actually grow on trees, so we want our clients to make sure they are looking for the best mattress for their budget. Remember to do your research on mattress material, durability, and support before purchasing!
