The Best Spring Getaways in Michigan

#1 Frankenmuth (approximately 1 hour from Howell, MI)

Frankenmuth is located in the heart of mid-Michigan. It’s also known as Little Bavaria. As an ideal place for families to visit, Frankenmuth has amazing restaurants, kid friendly outings, and more! Check out the Bavarian Inn and Zehnder’s while you’re there to eat traditional German cuisine served by staff in traditional German costumes.

After your belly’s are full, head on over to Zehnder’s Splash Village Hotel and Waterpark! With more than 50,000 square feet of water-filled fun, you can take a family raft ride, enjoy the activity pool, play water basketball and volleyball, and more!

Frankenmuth has festivities and festivals year round! Check out the town’s calendar of events here. Frankenmuth’s rich, historical beauty provides the ideal escape from every day life. Take a visit and take time to refresh, relax, and see this fun city!

#2 Ann Arbor (approximately 45 minutes from Howell, MI)

Home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is more than just a college town! It’s vibrant atmosphere is contagious. It’s also known for its art appreciation. The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is a fun stop for people of all ages, especially kids! With 9 unique galleries and more than 250 interactive exhibits, it has something for everyone.

While in Ann Arbor you can also go on the hunt for fairy doors! Not sure what I’m talking about? Well, if you’ve visited Ann Arbor before, chances are you’ve walked right past some of these. Hidden among various storefronts, cafes, and galleries in downtown Ann Arbor, finding these fairy doors is a great activity for both young and old!

A visit to Ann Arbor wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the University of Michigan’s main campus. It has a free art museum, a free museum of natural history, and more. Take a campus tour, check out the quad, and cheer on the Wolverines while you’re there!

Don’t forget to check out the Farmer’s Market. It’s open year-round and located in Ann Arbor’s Historic Kerrytown District. With more than 160 vendors, shoppers can enjoy all the city has to offer!

Zingerman’s Delicatessan is also a famous landmark in Ann Arbor. If you’re looking to satisfy your hunger on this trip, check it out!

#3 Detroit (approximately 50 minutes from Howell, MI)

Motown. The D. Motor City. No matter what you call it, Detroit is the biggest city in Michigan. It’s also loaded with fun attractions for adults and kids alike. The Detroit Zoo is home to more than 3,300 animals and has over one million visitors each year. It’s Arctic Ring of Life is North America’s largest polar bear exhibit!

While you’re in Detroit, head to American Coney Island! It’s been around since 1917. Eat the original “Coney Dog” and enjoy the sites and sounds of this historic place.

You can also check out Greektown while in Detroit! Experience delicious food and old-world charm in this tradition-rich city.

Spring is also the perfect time to visit Detroit for a Major League Baseball game! Cheer on Michigan’s own MLB team, the Detroit Tigers. Their season schedule can be found here.

#4 Grand Rapids (approximately 1.5 hours from Howell, MI)

Grand Rapids is a great spot for families to visit. Full of culture and recreation, everyone is sure to have a great time. In fact, the New York Times ranks Grand Rapids as #20 of #52 must-see places worldwide!

Stop by the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park to see breathtaking gardens, sculptures, and horticulture. In March and April you can see the Butterflies are Blooming exhibit!

Grand Rapids also has a great children’s museum. With 18 permanent exhibits including Aunt Daisy’s Farm, Mom & Pop Store, Treehouse, Giant Lite Brite, Wee Discover, Wee Bank, Puppet Stage, Buzzy Buzzy Bees and Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles kids (and adults!) will be engaged in the fun for hours! They also have amazing rotating featured exhibits.

Grand Rapids also has many museums, art institutes, the John Ball Zoo, and more. Give it a visit!

#5 Traverse City (approximately 3.5 hours from Howell, MI)

Traverse City has plenty of family-friend activities for everyone to enjoy year round. Once the weather is warm enough, you can soak up the sun at its famous beaches. It’s known as one of America’s Top 10 Beach Towns, and has over 180 miles of Lake Michigan Shoreline.

There’s also the Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor water park with more than 38,000 square feet of water rides! Splash the day away and make some amazing memories at this local destination.

Check out the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, where kids can explore interactive exhibits that allow them to pilot freighters, become raindrops in the water cycle, and more.

Don’t forget about the Magical History Tour while in Traverse City! Take a trip through Traverse City’s history on this 90 minute trolley tour. You’ll explore Sixth Street, Old Town, Downtown, Clinch Park, and the Grand Traverse Commons.
